Snap Out of It

How many times do we drive down the road, keeping to the rules of the road and in our lane when suddenly another driver ruins our day with some irresponsible manoeuvre that fortunately doesn’t result in an accident, but which does leave us fuming.  Or how many times do we go about our day, minding our own business when suddenly we get pulled into an argument, which leaves us fuming? And how many times....which leaves us fuming.

And once we’re fuming, it’s not easy to snap out of it, is it? No, it’s not. Unless, of course, – you have the tools.

Wouldn’t it be great if no matter what someone says to you, or if someone annoys you, or even manages to anger you, you can quickly snap out of it and move on with your inner peace intact? Sound impossible? Well, it’s not. And it has nothing to do with willpower either. It has everything to do with mind power, or as I like to call it, mind hacks. And of course, you need the desire. If you actually enjoy getting angry or upset, then this article s not for you. So, you can stop reading now.

But if you’re like me, a person who absolutely loves peace and joy, then let me tell you how you can achieve that.

Did you know that a person can only think one thought at a time? Think about it like this. If you’re walking down a road, you cannot obviously be walking down another road at the same time, right? It’s the same with our minds. It’s a fact - it cannot entertain two thoughts at once. If you’ve just been ignited by anger or annoyance and your peace has just been stolen, then remember this fact because knowing this is step 1 to bringing back your peace.

Step 2. Create a happy box. (Not a Happy Meal, although that would be nice now😊). You will need to gather a list of phrases, inspiring quotes, and stories, good memories, or even good jokes that make you happy and positive just by thinking about them. If you have an imagination like mine, then you can even create a happy scene in your mind and store it in your happy box.

Step 3. Lock it in. In my free book Mind Hacks, That Can Change Your Life, I explain in detail how to draw upon your senses and link them to certain triggers that will help lift your vibrations and elevate you to a happier state of mind. (Click my website link www.ursulagraetz.com if you would like a copy.) Now, the best way to empower your phrases, inspiring quotes and stories, good memories, and/or good jokes is by adding emotion to them, by using feelings and your senses such as sounds, smells, tastes, etc. For example, think about a time when you achieved something wonderful. Bring up all those feelings you felt at that time. Try to experience them again. Bring up as much of that emotion as possible. What were you feeling? What scent was in the air? What were you wearing? How did the material feel? What taste was in your mouth? The secret is to draw on as many senses as possible. If you don’t have a strong positive memory to draw on, then imagine how you would feel if you just won the lotto – go into detail. Now take those feelings and link them to a specific phrase, uplifting quote, inspiring story, or good memory in your happy box. Linger on that phrase etc, while bathing in those wonderful emotions. Then close your happy box until needed.

Step 4. Pre-scenarios. Now, keeping your happy box in mind, bring up a scenario that would make you angry or steal your peace. As soon as you’re angry, picture yourself opening your happy box and drawing on the strongest emotionally filled phrase, quote, story, memory, or joke. Remember, your mind cannot entertain two lines of thought at once. So fully engross yourself in your happy box choice. Before you know it, the incident that just moments before made your blood boil, will have simmered down. And if you continue to bathe yourself in the happy emotions long enough, your anger will disappear, leaving you with a clear mind to handle the situation you’re confronted with more appropriately. This is what I call, snapping out of negative emotions.

Step 5. Practice, practice, practice. Practice snapping out of negative emotions. It’s like I said earlier in this article if you desire the power to control your emotions, and wish to become a person who doesn’t get ruffled, swayed, or easily angered – then this technique is a good mind power tool to have.
